This garrigue zone was initially ear-marked as a site for a waste disposal facility. It has become, after pressure from local inhabitants, an ecological site (despite the presence of high tension electicity lines). The sheep pens are located on a south-south west axis in order to protect them from the mistral winds. Rainwater is recuperated and stored in a tank in order to feed the animals. The choice of timber (douglas pine for the structure and larch for the cladding) was made for both aesthetic and environmental reasons. The use of the materials insures a long life for the building, avoiding possible degradations (anti-rotting timbers, without chemical treatment). Natural lighting is used wherever possible. For example, translucent roof overhangs capture winter light. Photovoltaic panels will be installed, but until then the artificial lighting is supplied by compact flourescents powered by a transformer. Ventilation is in the form of natural convection in accordance with normal sheep breeding practice.
